Web Development: Stages, Standards, Real Web Projects

Web Development: Stages, Standards, Real Web Projects

Engineer and scientist Tim Burns-Lee in 1991 created the world’s first website. It was a primitive informational page to show how the HTML markup looks and works. Since that time, only 26 years have passed, but the number of websites of varying complexity and subject matter has already reached more than a billion. Sometimes it is very difficult to keep pace with the informational technologies development process. Therefore, the majority of the world’s population remains users on the World Wide Web. But there are those for whom the Internet is more than a mean of searching. These people are called web developers.

So, what is web development for a programmer and a designer?

As an IT worker, I can say that first of all this is a hobby. No, it’s not just a job. Design and programming do not consist of performing the same tasks over and over again. This type of activity requires a constant search for new and better solutions. That’s why you can not just treat it as a job, you have to be really into it.
Programming languages are improving all the time, updates appear every month or even a day. And you always need to keep your finger on the pulse, because you are at risk of being left far behind, considering the increasing pace of progress.

Web-development for a real programmer or a designer is the same as an art for the artist.
Although, it’s not just a passion either. First of all the developer is a specialist when working with the team and communicating with clients. His task is not just to code or to design, but to create a product that will meet the client’s requirements as well as the user needs. And in order for both sides to be satisfied, the common standards of web development and the clear division of project implementation into the stages were created.

Modern stages of website or web application development

1. The brief analysis and technical specifications development.
A brief is a document which summarizes requirements of the Client to the design and functionality of the future website or application, as well as other details of the project. Managers of IT companies develop technical specifications for the developers based on the brief.

2. Development of the marketing strategy and the structure of the future resource.
Nobody cared about this yesterday but today it has become extremely important. This stage is carried out in parallel with the technical specifications development or even goes first. A website is just a part of the marketing strategy and its tool. And if you want it to perform its functions properly, before you start to build your website you need to see the marketers, in particular, an SEO specialist.

3. Design
At this stage, the resource pages are designed starting with the main page. Also, if we talk about a website design, we used to create the desktop version first, but it’s different now. Most users use mobile devices to access the Internet, so it is very important that the website not just looks but works well on smartphones. For instance, the technology called Mobile First which appeared recently suggests developing a mobile version of the website first to make sure it is optimized for mobile devices.
User-friendly interface with intuitive navigation is among the requirements that don’t change.

4. Programming
Front-end developers make the design work turning mockups into interactive web pages. Then back-end specialists begin to build the server part of the website or application. Their work cannot be seen by a user, but you can feel it while using certain functions of the resource, for example, creating an account or making an online purchase. All your requests are handled on the side of the back end. The server part is not always developed individually for every website. There are some ready-made solutions called content management systems (CMS). The optimal CMS is chosen depending on the type of website. In this case, experts customize the system for a specific site.

5. Filling the site with content.
This is done by the content manager of the Customer or the IT company as a stage separate from the overall development process.
By the way, our company fills first 50 product cards in online stores for free.

6. Resource location on the Internet.
At this stage, the developer company helps the client to choose a hosting (place on the Internet) and get the domain (address of the resource). These two things are needed to place the website on the Internet. Then it is transferred to this hosting.

7. Testing.
The resource is manually tested to ensure the compliance with design mockups, to check download speed, optimization for mobile devices and browser compatibility at each stage. The final quality check is an evaluation of the ready product in terms of both programmer and user experience.

8. Resource promotion.
This stage is not part of the main development process, but it is very important in the digital marketing era. At this stage SEO specialists, SMM-managers, targetologists are engaged in the complex resource promotion. They analyze how it works, develop the strategy of internal and external optimization and implement it.
