‘Dad, so what is your job?’, asked our colleague his seven-year-old daughter. ‘I make websites’, he answered without thinking. ‘No, daddy’, the girl turned her head to the flip chart where the structure of the company was drawn. Only in response to ‘I’m a Front-End Developer’ she nodded and smiled.
On Friday, August 31, we invited our kids to the office. At the beginning of the tour, we intentionally asked if they knew what their parents’ jobs were. The most popular answer was ‘makes websites’. But after some 30 minutes, the guests could not only name the professions in IT but also tell what responsibilities each expert has.
The first stop was in the sales department
Sales Manager Olga explained what an IT sales expert does, and also gave guests the first task – a filled brief from the client.
Stop 2. Project Managers
In that department, we got acquainted with the work of managers of our company and also received technical specifications for the website development.
Stop 3. This stop coincided with the next step in the website development process – the design
The designers told and showed us how they create website mockups. They also handed over the finished web pages which we took to the front-end development department with us.
Stop 4. There we got a chance to see how mockups became interactive web pages
Front-End Developer Vitalii also showed us how every user can view and even change the code of the website right in the browser.
Stop 5. Back-End Development Department
In the back-end development department, guests learned who and how makes the website work.
Stop 6. CMS development department
At this stop, kids realized that you do not always need to reinvent the wheel as you can use some ready-made solutions. In order to make the administrative panel of the website, you don’t necessarily build back-end from scratch. Here we received the last part of the website OpenCart dashboard and went to get acquainted with QA testers who told us what bugs are and how to deal with them.
The last stop was the digital marketing department
About setting up advertisements on the Internet and about SEO we listened the most carefully, but at the end of the tour, almost all kids said that they would like to become the designers 🙂
Of course, time will show who our guests will be when they grow up, but the sparkling eyes and the strong interest to what we were telling them during the tour suggest that these kids are our future colleagues 😉
What we know for sure is that our children are very creative and talented. And we are always ready to support their desire to learn something new. After the excursion, we counted the buttons which were given as the reward for active participation at every stop, and then received gifts. Everyone got a notebook and a pen with corporate symbols, as well as the discount certificates for the language school Just Speak were our favorite teacher Natalia teaches.
